The world has finally reached “the beginning of the end

The world has finally reached “the beginning of the end” of the AIDS pandemic that has infected and killed millions in the past 30 years, according to a leading campaign group fighting HIV.
The number of people newly infected with HIV over the last year was lower than the number of HIV-positive people who joined those getting access to the medicines they need to take for life to keep AIDS at bay.

But in a report to mark World AIDS Day on December 1, the ONE campaign, an advocacy group working to end poverty and preventable disease in African countries, warned that reaching this milestone did not mean the end of AIDS was around the corner.
“We’ve passed the tipping point in the AIDS fight at the global level, but not all countries are there yet, and the gains made can easily stall or unravel,” Erin Hohlfelder, ONE’s director of global health policy, said.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS is spread via blood, semen and breast milk. There is no cure for the infection, but AIDS can be kept at bay for many years with cocktails of antiretroviral drugs.

United Nations data, reported by the Reuters news agency, showed that in 2013, 35 million people were living with HIV, 2.1 million people were newly infected with the virus and some 1.5 million people died of AIDS. By far the greatest part of the HIV/AIDS burden is in sub-Saharan Africa.
The AIDS pandemic began more than 30 years ago and has killed up to 40 million people worldwide.
The United Nations AIDS agency, UNAIDS, says that, by June 2014, some 13.6 million people globally had access to AIDS drugs, a dramatic improvement on the 5 million who were getting treatment in 2010.

“Despite the good news, we should not take a victory lap yet,” said Hohlfelder.
She highlighted several threats to current progress, including a $3 billion shortfall in the funds needed each year to control HIV around the world.
“We want to see bold new funding from a more diversified base, including more from African domestic budgets,” she said.

ONE also noted that HIV is increasingly concentrated among hard-to-reach populations such as injecting drug users, gay men and sex workers – groups who are often stigmatised and have trouble accessing treatment and prevention services.

December’s decisive decisions

December is a month laden with many crucial decisions
that would define the course of the country
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor

The nation enters into the last month of the year with a number of crucial political decisions set to be taken that could well underline the future direction of the country.
Central to the political decisions to be taken in the month is the decision on the line up of candidates of the two major political parties who are expected to battle for supremacy in the coming elections that will define the future direction of the country in the immediate and perhaps long term.

The election is due next February but the candidates would have to emerge this month under the provisions of the electoral act.
Besides that, the ensuing face off between President Goodluck Jonathan and his adversaries in the National Assembly could come to a head in December when the legislators weigh the option of serving the president an impeachment notice or not.

The schedule of primaries to select candidates for the election due next February was itself laced in deep political intrigues. After initially fixing its primary schedules to commence in mid November with the key gubernatorial primaries initially fixed for November 15, All Progressives Congress, APC strategists moved it to fall behind that of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which had fixed its own gubernatorial primaries for November 29.

caucus sometime in early November, APC rescheduled its primaries for December 4th. The decision was to allow the party lure those who fail to make it in the PDP to move over to the APC to try their luck and by that, dismember the PDP. Indeed, the APC had earlier amended its constitution to remove restriction on new members contesting in the party’s primaries at any level.

Terror war: I’m against Jonathan move to borrow $1bn – Buhari

By Abdulsalam Muhammad KANO – Former Head of a military junta, and leading presidential hopeful of All Progressive Congress [APC], General Muhammadu Buhari has kicked against moves by President Goodluck Jonathan to borrow $1 billion Dollars to prosrcute insurgents in the north east.

General Buhari said, ‘for 30 months as we fought civil war from here to the East, and Nigeria never borrow a dime, and dont forget that Nigeria won the war that continue to keep us as a single entity’. MOHAMMADU BUHARI MOHAMMADU BUHARI Buhari position was made in Kano shortly after he commiserat with victims of last Friday multiple blast at Kano central mosque said there was “no basis or cogent reason as to why Nigeria must borrow money to fight the Insurgency.

General Buhari stated that the revenue accrued to the country when there was stability in oil market was enough to purchase military hardware to curtail the security challenges.

The civil war hero noted that the lack of political will on the part of the siting government, high level corruption and looting of national treasury are factors working against the war on terror.

General Buhari lamented the botch efforts by the National Assembly to conduct a public hearing on the matter, pointing out that from indications the “important national issue has once more been swept under the carpet.” He expressed regret that despite open complaint by the on several occasion the Military prosecuting the war of lack of sophisticated weapons, stressed that nothing significant has been done to address the challenge.

The veteran presidential aspirant disclosed “my worry and concern is that from 1999 to date Nigeria has gotten huge foreign earnings in Dollars and yet no one can say where are these money, Nigeria before now was having its National carrier, with hundreds of shipping Cargos, but today we are practically zero and no one can tell what happened, and now somebody want to put the nation in another trouble by borrowing, the move is totally unacceptable to us’.

In his own contribution to the national question, Senator Olurunbe Momorah (Lagos) who was on the entourage of General Buhari, said that three things would shape the 2015 campaign adding that they includes includes ‘Security, Corruption and Economy.

Dangote, First Bank On The List Of Top 100 Nigerian Companies

Federal Government of Nigeria on Monday made known the top 100 companies in Nigeria for the 2014 fiscal year.

Dangote, First Bank, Chevron, Nigerian Breweries Plc and Flour Mills of Nigeria were some of the companies that made the list.

The government said the Top 100 Companies Award fixed for December 1, the first in the history of the country, was aimed at encouraging performing companies to further contribute to the economy in more significant ways.

The Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, and Chairman of the selection committee, Mr. Jim Obaze, made the announcement while briefing journalists in Abuja about the award.

Amazingly, he said a lot of companies sprang surprises by making it to the top 100. Some of these companies, according to him, are Dolphin Foods, Chi-Group, Mamuda Industries, Eko Supreme, Indorama Eleme Petrochemical Limited, Elizade Nigeria Limited, APN Terminal, UAC Plc, Bolawole Enterprises and Wemco Metal Products.

According to Obaze, the committee considered a lot of criteria based on international best practices before the companies were “carefully” selected. He said the celebration of these companies would promote business enterprise in Nigeria, foster socio-economic development and improve the general well-being of Nigerians.

He said that some of the criteria used were the amount of turnover, level of investment in the country, and number of jobs so far created in the economy.

Others were the impact that the companies had had in the community, level of corporate governance and the amount of investments they planned to make in the nearest future, he added. He said, “In looking at the top 100 companies, there are international benchmarks as set by the International Integrated Reporting Council.

“There are five of such benchmarks; the first one is to look at the strategic focus of the organisation. You look at the connectivity of information which is the second benchmark.”

He also said some other things the group looks at are taxes paid over a period of time, the employment opportunities generated, and the level of investment in Nigeria as well as their contribution in area of social responsibility.

He said since the private sector companies were creating wealth and jobs for the economy, they should be honored for believing and investing in Nigeria.

“SMEs Will be More Productive When Internet Penetration Grows High”

The impact of IT infrastructure to the growth and the productivity of SMEs in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. We have seen upcoming sectors such as the e-commerce sector grow at a rapid rate in recent years. Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Nigeria, Mr. Olayinka Oni believes that technology will continue to shape the interaction between businesses and consumers. He made known recently while speaking on the Mara Mentor Talk Show.

Reiterating the implications of increased broadband penetration into Nigeria’s economy, he explained, “People will get a lot more with broadband technology especially through e-commerce which is said to contribute about 7% to Nigeria’s GDP Ericsson Mobility published a recent report, making it known that mobile broadband is becoming prominent in Sub-Saharan Africa as the region grows more and more reliant on mobile devices and the society embracing mobility.

Since technology is here to stay and currently encouraged by the soaring internet penetration and mobile adoption rates, businesses in the Nigeria’s ICT sector have been able to leverage the unique advantages in IT infrastructure despite the challenges of running a business. Mr. Oni urged entrepreneurs to leverage the new trends in technology such as social media platforms, email marketing, online data and other collaborative tools that can help drive growth and cut overheads. He advised entrepreneurs to get used to the technologies that would grow their business while keeping an eye on online consumer behaviour and the latest trends in ICT.

Nigeria unrest: President Jonathan condemns mosque attack

"They started shooting randomly at worshippers" - Muhammad Bello was near the mosque when the explosions bega
The president of Nigeria has vowed "to leave no stone unturned" in tracking down the perpetrators of a mosque attack that killed at least 81 people.
Goodluck Jonathan urged the nation "to confront the common enemy" after the gun and bomb attack during Friday's prayers in the northern city of Kano.
Hundreds of people were injured in an attack which officials say bears the hallmarks of Boko Haram militant group.
No-one has so far said that they carried out Friday's assault.
Kano's Central Mosque, where the attack took place, is where the influential Muslim leader, the emir of Kano, usually leads prayers.
He recently called for people to arm themselves against Boko Haram, so it is possible that this attack was in response to that call, says the BBC's Will Ross in Abuja.
Boko Haram, a Sunni Islamist group, has been waging an insurgency in Nigeria since 2009 and has killed more than 2,000 people this year, human rights groups say.
'Helter-skelter' President Jonathan ordered the country's security services "to launch a full-scale investigation and to leave no stone unturned until all agents of terror undermining the right of every citizen to life and dignity are tracked down and brought to justice".
A number of the injured are being treated at Kano's hospital
Police officers at the scene of the attack in Kano Eyewitnesses spoke of three bomb explosions and a gunfight near the mosque
He said Nigerians should "remain united to confront the common enemy".
The government, he said, would "continue to take every step to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in acts of terrorism".
Reuters news agency counted 81 bodies in two separate mortuaries following the attack on the Central Mosque.
An AFP reporter at counted 92 bodies at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital mortuary alone. Most victims were men or boys with blast injuries and severe burns.
Some reports say the first bomb was hidden in a car which was driven straight into the worshippers.
One eyewitness told the BBC's Focus on Africa: "The imam was about to start prayer when he saw somebody in a car trying to force himself into the mosque. But when people stopped him, he detonated the explosions. People started running helter-skelter."

Several men then opened fire on the crowd, killing more people. Three of the gunmen were caught and killed on the spot, the BBC's Will Ross reports.
BBC Hausa editor Mansur Liman said one witness at a local hospital had described the scenes there as being the most horrible he had ever seen.
Boko Haram has stepped up attacks against civilian targets since the Nigerian military launched an offensive last year.
The group carries out almost daily attacks mostly in the north-east of the country. Also on Friday, the security forces said they had foiled an attempt to attack worshippers in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri, defusing six bombs planted in a mosque and a nearby market.
The militants were also behind the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno state this year, an act that sparked international outrage.

  • Launched military operations in 2009 to create Islamic state
  • Thousands killed, mostly in north-eastern Nigeria - also attacked police and UN headquarters in capital, Abuja
  • Some three million people affected

West Africa Ebola toll nears 7,000

The number of people killed by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has risen to 6,928, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.
The toll has increased by over 1,000 since the WHO's last report on Wednesday, but it includes unreported deaths from earlier in the outbreak.
Experts say the infection rate is more significant that the death toll, as it reflects how the virus is spreading.
Infection rates are decreasing in Liberia, but are high in Sierra Leone.
There have been over 16,000 reported cases in Guinea, Sierra and Liberia.

Mali has reported seven deaths from Ebola and 10 confirmed cases.
More than 4,181 people have died of Ebola in Liberia but while the country has recorded the highest number of cases, the rate of infection is slowing.
The outbreak was also now "stable" in Guinea, the World Health Organization (WHO) said last week.
The disease is now spreading fastest in Sierra Leone, with 6,802 cases reported in total.
Nigeria and Senegal are both clear of the quarantine period and no new cases or deaths have been reported.
Ebola is spread only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person showing symptoms, such as fever or vomiting.
People caring for the sick or handling the bodies of people infected Ebola are therefore especially vulnerable.

He added that about eight million people will be required to operate expanding infrastructure, during the same period. In the agriculture and mining sectors, Sulaiman said implementation of the NIIMP will create additional 20 million and five million jobs respectively over the next 30 years. For sustainable implementation of the plan, the Minister said, the document would be sent to the National Assembly as an executive bill for the draft to be translated into a legal framework.

“The NIIMP does not only provide opportunities for deep-pocket infrastructure investors and developer, it also holds promises for all Nigerians. With improved infrastructure services, our economic growth will be accelerated and the standard of living on Nigerians will improve significantly. “It will create millions of jobs.

An estimated 600,000 additional construction workers will be required to maintain and expand existing infrastructure in the next five years. Also, eight million people will be required to operate expanding infrastructure, during the same period, while additional 20 million and five million jobs respectively would be created over the next 30 years from the agriculture and mining sectors,” he stated. Suleiman also stated that the NIIMP would raise Nigeria’s stock of infrastructure from the current 20-25 per cent of the GDP to at least 70 per cent of GDP by 2043.

Dieziani Alison-Madueke elected first female president of OPEC

Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum, Dieziani Alison-Madueke has been elected the first female president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). She was elected yesterday at the ongoing 166th General Meeting of the body in Vienna, Austria. She replaces former president of OPEC, Libyan Vice Prime Minister for Corporations, Abdourhman Atahar-Ahirish. She was elected for one year and is expected to immediately resume office.

FG saves N171bn from technology agreements

The Federal Government has saved N171.85bn in the past five years through the scrutiny of technology transfer agreements entered into between organizations in Nigeria and foreign entities.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Abdu Bulama, disclosed this at the 2014 Ministerial Platform which held in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the minister, the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion has been scrutinizing applications for technology acquisition from operators in the Nigerian economy, adding that the exercise had saved the country N171.85bn in the past five years.
On a year-by-year basis, N13.01bn was saved in 2009; N94.42bn in 2010; N28.56bn in 2011; N8.46bn in 2012 and N27.4bn in 2013.
He said, “The intervention of NOTAP has led to financial savings for the country, which would have been unremitted due to over-invoicing of technology transfer fees.
“Since the inception of NOTAP, it has made financial savings in billions of naira, due to its intervention in the process of evaluation and registration of technology transfer agreements.”
Bulama also disclosed that the National Space Research and Development would launch a satellite made in Nigeria by 2018.
Currently, the three satellites that Nigeria has in the space were either made in China or United Kingdom.
The minister said the 2018 target for a satellite made in Nigeria was realizable.
“They (NASRDA) should be able to meet the target of 2018 to produce a Nigerian satellite,” he said.
Bulama said in line with the Transformation Agenda of President Good luck Jonathan, the ministry had focused on boosting agricultural raw materials through a number of activities.
He said, “The Raw Material Research and Development Council procured 1.6 and 2.0 tonnes of Samcot, 11 and 13 varieties of cotton respectively from the Institute of Agricultural Research, ABU, Zaria and distributed them to members of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria in six states including Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Edo States.
“This is targeted at increasing cotton yield to feed the textile industry that is almost comatose due to insufficiency of raw materials or reliance on imported cotton resulting in undue competition.
“The Oyo State Sugar cane Farmers Union was provided with 60 tonnes of sugar cane seeds for their sugar cane farm clusters.
“These programmes are projected to create 20,000 jobs along the agricultural and industrial manufacturing value chain over a period of five years.”

Students protest as Jonathan visits Yoruba leaders

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Friday protested alleged interruption of their examination by President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the institution.
The students claimed that the President’s visit subjected them to unfavourable condition as commercial buses were not allowed to convey them to the campus by security agents.
The students had to trek long distance to their various examination halls.
Jonathan was at the university to attend a summit of Yoruba leaders convened by a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Chief Olabode George.
The summit was held at the Oduduwa Hall of the university.
The students claimed that the summit was ill-timed because it was scheduled to hold during the period of their examinations.
The protesters gathered at the front of Oduduwa Hall with their placards shouting “thief” on all the politicians that thronged the venue.
Among the inscriptions on their placards were “Education is our right,” “give us credible leadership” and “All we want is standard education.”
Some of the students also alleged that the buses provided by their union to ease movement were prevented from entering the campus.
One of the students identified as Isreal, said, “This is rubbish. Is the President or politics more important than our lives? How will the President and the organiser of the summit subject us to this kind of suffering?
“Buses were denied entrance and we have to start trekking.”
Another student added, “All in the name of the President’s visit, all activities were interrupted or paralysed. We can’t do anything as a result of the visit.
“The organisers should not have brought this summit here at this period. The organisers should have known OAU students don’t like their examinations disrupted.”
A post-graduate diploma student was, however, seen arguing with some security personnel when she was asked to turn back.
Though she explained that she had examination, the security officials refused to listen to her.
The President’s visit also paralysed economic activities in the university.

Court backs PDP leadership to dissolve Ondo exco

A Federal High court sitting in Abuja on Friday ruled that the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has the constitutional right to dissolve its state executive.
The judgement was the outcome of a case filed against the NWC by a faction of the Ondo PDP led by Ebenezer Alabi, following the dissolution of the state executive after Governor Olusegun Mimiko defected to the party.
The dissolution paved the way for the installation of a caretaker committee headed by Dare Adeleke.
Ruling on the case, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, said the constitution of the PDP allowed for the dissolution of the state executive by the party’s leadership in spite of its four-year tenure.
The court refused to grant the prayer of the plaintiff to ensure that the plaintiff is the sole body that supplies names of aspirants in the upcoming elections in the state to the leadership of the party.
It also refused to grant any order against the Independent National Electoral Commission to ignore any list submitted to it by the party other than the names supplied by the plaintiff.
The trial judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, took arguments from all parties to the suit.
Plaintiffs in the suit are contesting the powers of the party’s leadership to dissolve their executive, which was constituted in 2012.
Defendants in the suit include Dare Adeleke; Osawu Solomon; PDP; its National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu; the party’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladapo; INEC; and the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba.
The PDP had entered a preliminary objection to the hearing of the suit.
During hearing in the matter, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), counsel to the PDP and two others, argued that the suit was premature, defective and not justifiable.

Don’t disenfranchise Rivers electorate, Amaechi tells INEC

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission not to disenfranchise any eligible voter in the state.
Amaechi gave the warning during a state-wide broadcast on Friday, when INEC began the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in the state.
In addition, Amaechi urged eligible voters in the state to get their cards during the three-day exercise, describing votes as the people’s voice in a democracy.
The governor also appealed to INEC to ensure a hitch-free distribution of PVCs, adding that eligible voters should not be denied registration.
He, however, stated that despite the challenges experienced by INEC, the people should not relent in participating in the exercise.
He said, “In spite of the various challenges experienced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, we urge our citizens not to relent in participating in the exercise.
“It is our hope that the electoral body will do all that is necessary to ensure a hitch-free exercise in the state and that no eligible voter is denied his card or registration.
Meanwhile, the distribution of PVCs started late in most parts of Port Harcourt, the state capital, as INEC officials did not arrive at their booths on time.
However, the waiting crowd reduced in number shortly after the arrival of the INEC officials as the issuance of the items was swift.
One of the INEC officials at Saint Paul’s State School, Port Harcourt, said they started work late because they needed to take inventory of the number of PVCs in their custody before moving to the various points of delivery.

Naira devaluation unlikely to depress stocks further – Operators

Some capital market operators have said the devaluation of the naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria may not depress the equities market, which has endured a turbulent year, further.
According them, the market has already declined considerably in reaction to falling oil prices and speculation that the naira will be devalued, hence there is unlikely to be a negative impact in the short-term.

On Tuesday, when the move was announced by the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Amiefule, the market capitalisation of the listed equities rose by N80bn or 0.71. This happened a day after the market cap had declined by N57bn.
On Wednesday, the equities value rose further by N154bn or 1.4 per cent to N11.417tn.
“The market may have preempted the worst case scenario that the naira will be devalued and hence declined considerably, losing a lot of points so far,” the Managing Director, Highcap Securities Limited, Mr. David Adonri, said.
He explained that the gains recorded on Tuesday and Wednesday showed that the devaluation had not impacted the stock market more negatively “because the market has been proactively reacting since the price of crude oil started declining”.
It is not unlikely, therefore, that the devaluation of the naira may not materially elicit further reaction from the market, at least in the short term, he added.
He, however, explained that the situation might change if the current stabilisation measures put in place by the CBN failed and the authorities applied stiffer measures.
The Chief Executive Officer, Enterprise Stockbrokers, Mr. Rotimi Fakayejo, expressed the view that the devaluation would be positive for the capital market.
This, he explained, was because it would attract foreign funds into the market as the equities were currently cheap and the dollar would give more naira.
He added that the move might also ease the impact of the political uncertainty in the country.
“The way it has been, there is likelihood that this (naira devaluation) would override the political uncertainty,” he said stressing that many foreign investors knew that Nigeria would overcome the current situation.
“We have been in situations that are more difficult than this. Also, by the time the party primaries have taken place, there is going to be more stability in the market.”
Fakayejo also said the gains of the last two day could be linked to the move.
“When you look at the kind of volume it is easy to infer that. It had been speculated that the naira was going to be devalued and the immediate impact of that is the attraction of funds into the market and that has already started happening,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, who said the devaluation of the naira was the right move because the country’s revenue was down, explained that before the devaluation, foreign investors had been selling their shares to take their money out, “but now that the value has been established that will stop.”
He said the devaluation would help stop investors that were trying to pull out of the country from doing so

Eliminating Violence Against Women

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is both a human rights violation and one of the most widespread drivers of poverty. As well as impacting on mental and physical health, violence (and the threat of violence) can also deny women and girls opportunities that would otherwise help to lift them out of poverty, such as attending school, working outside of the home and participating in civil society.
Ending VAWG is a core pillar of Oxfam's work on putting an end to gender injustice.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence runs from 25 November, the International Day of Eliminating Violence Against Women, until 10 December, International Human Rights Day. In this way the international campaign highlights the fact that violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights.
The campaign has been used as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women by:
  • Raising awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels.
  • Strengthening local work around violence against women.
  • Establishing a clear link between local and international work to end violence against women.
  • Providing a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies.
  • Demonstrating the solidarity of women around the world organizing against violence against women.
  • Creating tools to pressure governments to implement promises made to eliminate violence against women.
